Man with an apple after dental implant surgery in Chesapeake. Dental implants are an excellent solution to permanently replace your missing teeth using a treatment that closely looks and feels natural. A dental implant replicates the entire structure of a tooth from the root up, allowing it to provide unmatched benefits not possible using any other prosthetic. To rebuild your smile, you will need dental implant surgery in Chesapeake to place a titanium post into your jawbone to serve as a root to support your custom-made restoration. While your body heals, there are a few foods you’ll need to avoid to promote a comfortable and complication-free recovery.

Foods to Skip After Dental Implant Surgery

Your mouth will be a bit tender for a few days after your procedure, but you can manage your discomfort using an over-the-counter pain reliever. It’s also best to make a few dietary changes to prevent any unnecessary pain or damage while you recover, such as:

  • Stick to a soft diet until your pain subsides. Slowly reintroduce your normal diet as your mouth heals.
  • Avoid foods that are hot or spicy because they can irritate the incision site.
  • Don’t consume any alcohol because it can increase pain and swelling. Alcohol can also slow the healing process.
  • Avoid any foods that are chewy or sticky since they require a lot of chewing, which can increase your discomfort.
  • Don’t eat overly hard foods to prevent them from causing becoming trapped in the incision sites, like nuts, chips, or crackers.

Foods to Eat After Dental Implant Surgery

Although there will be a few limitations in your diet, there are still plenty of foods you can eat after your surgery, like:

  • Applesauce doesn’t require a lot of jaw movement, and it is a great source of vitamin C and dietary fiber.
  • Broth-based soups are warm and filling while also providing protein to keep you nourished.
  • Mashed potatoes are high in fiber and won’t irritate your healing tissues. You can add butter or cheese to give them a little more flavor.
  • Low-fat yogurt is an excellent snack to eat during your recovery, but don’t add any nuts or granola.
  • Instant oatmeal is a great option for breakfast; however, you’ll want to wait to eat it for a few days after your surgery because the oats can irritate your gums.

Additional Tips After Dental Implant Surgery

After your surgery, it’s best to maintain your oral hygiene habits to prevent an infection. Be careful when brushing and flossing near the surgical sites. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water 2-3 times per day to keep your mouth clean.

If you have any questions or concerns during your recovery, don’t hesitate to contact your dental office.
